Today, Wall Mirrors will take a look at two of the most spectacular mirrored designs that were actually produced by one of Maison et Objet’s upcoming rising talents: Hongjie Yang. Maison et Objet Paris is almost making its return to Paris Nord Villepinte, from 18-22 January, and, this year, the rising talent awards will be focused on the skill of Chinese designers. Over the next few weeks, the Wall Mirrors blog will feature a series of article regarding the event and all of its stunning features, starting off with a sculptural luxury mirror and a coffee table conceived by Yang.

Born and raised in China, Yang studied at the Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands, receiving a Master’s Degree in Contextual Design. His powerful works, which explore the divide between nature and culture, the born and the made, have been widely exhibited including in the USA, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and China.
“Many of my works search for a new class of aesthetics which transcends the divide between the power of human and nature.”
Hongjie’s exquisite pieces appear naturally-formed, but closer inspection shows that technology has also played a role in their creation. His works pair sharp lines with a rubble-like texture that appears to fall away, like a relic from another planet.
The designer’s aluminium Synthesis Monolith Mirror and coffee table are two of the most fascinating designs that are not only organic but also machined. These pieces portray an evolutionary arc starting from a primitive historical context and moving towards a smoother, elegant future.
“At first glance, these objects are naturally formed. Upon closer examination, traces of technology reveal their mystical purpose, to encourage a new perception that oscillates between a sense of the natural and the technological–and the fleeting illusion of their convergence.”
